There’s a trend at the moment, led by acts like Ariana Grande and Zendaya, for American teen girl singers to pursue a more mature musical direction – a sharp contract to the production line pop the previous generation, such as Miley Cyrus and Hilary Duff, started out with. Justine Skye is a pretty 19-year-old, a friend of Kendall Jenner with a huge Instagram following, but her new single Collide certainly isn’t your typical teen pop. It’s a cool, grown-up R&B track, featuring Tyga and produced by hip hop hitmaker DJ Mustard. If the reaction to Collide and Justine’s debut album is positive, there’s no doubt she’ll be moving into the mainstream with the next release, just like Ariana, and the hints of Rihanna in Collide suggest she could make a very good pop star.
