The trend for sparse, intricate indie-R&B has certainly spread to the UK but no British artists have yet made their mark on the genre. 19-year-old Joel Compass is the first strong contender, named "the UK Weeknd" by The Guardian. He's already well respected for his arty music videos and smooth falsetto vocals, and will play Wireless Festival next month. He has collaborated with British songwriters of the moment Maiday and Kid Harpoon, and is a producer as well as singer. New single Fucked Up, about cheating on his girlfriend, has already eclipsed the YouTube views of its predecessor Back To Me after just one week.
