Confusingly, two of the best songs out this week come from new artists called HANNIE and Hatchie. I picked Sugar & Spice as my Song of the Week because I love its sweet grunge-pop sound, which reminds me of one of my favourite albums of the past few years, California Nights by Best Coast. It could equally be described as a mix of Carly Rae Jepsen and Wolf Alice, which I think you’ll agree is a very appealing prospect. Girl-grunge definitely seems to be a trend of the moment, with acts such as Sunflower Bean and Soccer Mommy attracting attention, but this is definitely the most accessible if you’re looking for an entry-point to the genre. Hatchie is the stage name of Harriette Pilbeam, a 25-year-old singer from Brisbane, who is signed to Heavenly Recordings alongside fellow Aussie pop kids Confidence Man.
