Future Stars: Dreezy (Interscope)

With Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks falling out of favour, Nicki Minaj is back in her rightful place, indisputably the biggest female rapper in the world. But maybe it’s time someone new came along to keep her on her toes! Tink is one to watch, and I’d love to see British girls Lady Leshurr and Lil Simz succeed, but recently a new contender has emerged. Dreezy is a 21-year-old Chicago rapper, singer and songwriter, born Seandrea Sledge (no relation to Sister or Percy… I assume). She has built a strong online following by collaborating with many other up-and-coming artists, including Future Pop star DeJ Loaf. Two years ago, Vice called her the “crown princess of Chicago rap,” and now she’s ready to represent her hometown scene in the mainstream. While Dreezy’s previous EP From Now On showed her prowess as a rapper, now that she’s ticked the credibility box she’s moving quickly on to her next achievement. She’s aiming for the top with the smooth, radio-friendly single Body, featuring Jeremih, and the early signs suggest it’s working. The track is currently riding high in the US Shazam new release chart and the global Spotify viral chart, and it’s just broken into the US urban radio airplay chart. Could “I’m about to catch a body” be the next viral rap catchphrase?
