Future Stars: Clean Cut Kid (Polydor)

A few months ago I heard that a Liverpudlian indie-pop band called Clean Cut Kid had played a gig packed with A&Rs, so I looked them up online. There wasn’t much to find, apart from Vitamin C, a track in the vein of The Lumineers and Haim. The group, formed by Mike Halls, has been around for a few years with different members (including Deadmau5 collaborator Greta Svabo Bech). They’re now getting their big break as a four-piece, with Mike joined by his wife Evelyn Halls (formerly Evelyn Burke), Saul Godman and Ross Higginson. This year things have moved fast, as they’ve signed to Polydor and released Vitamin C as a single, which now has a video. It’s had support from all the usual UK indie sites, Annie Mac and Huw Stephens on Radio 1, and prominent placing in Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight. It’s what you’d expect when Polydor get behind a track, but the jury’s still out as to whether the band will match their industry buzz with real world popularity.
