Before the end of 2016, it’s entirely likely that there will be no 90s hits left to be covered or sampled. Perky LA electro-pop trio Cheat Codes have staked their claim on Salt-n-Pepa’s 1991 single Let’s Talk About Sex. Their version, released through Spinnin Records in collaboration with Dutch DJ trio Kris Kross Amsterdam, is currently striding up the global Spotify chart and has accumulated a very impressive two million plays on Soundcloud. But even if it had 10 plays, I’d still be convinced this was a future hit, as it perfectly translates the original for a 2016 audience (they’ve basically covered the song in the style of Justin Bieber) and it has a bright, cutesy feel which is ideal for the start of summer. Their original tracks, such as Say Goodbye and Adventure, are in the same vein (i.e. dance music that sounds like boybands), with similar appeal to Tiesto’s Red Lights and Duke Dumont’s Ocean Drive. I’m definitely on board with this trend – more, please!
