Song of the Week: Capital Cities – Vowels

I’m not too convinced by the new DNCE single Body Moves, but this track released on the same day by Capital Cities is exactly what they should have done. Vowels has a memorable, original lyrical concept and groovy disco-pop sound, much like Cake By The Ocean and Toothbrush. Capital Cities have never had an official UK hit, though they got close with their best known song Safe and Sound, which made no.42 in 2011. It was much bigger in their home country of the US, where it reached the Billboard top 10 and was certified 2x Platinum. Since then they’ve failed to trouble the charts, but I believe Vowels has the potential to get them back on track. It’s radio-friendly and should appeal across generations and tastes. They’re yet to announce a new album, but Vowels is the lead track from their upcoming EP.
