Until recently, the main thing that popped into my mind when I saw the name of Australian singer Amy Shark was how funny it is when Aussies say the word “shark.” It’s almost as good as when Americans try (and fail) to say “squirrel.” But no longer will her name by associated with such amusement, as she has just released her first top quality pop song. I Said Hi is a rousing, anthemic tune with a lightly rocky edge, biting lyrics and a punchy chorus. She has a growing international following but is already a big deal in Australia, where her single Adore was voted no.2 in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2016. She toured Europe last month, including two UK dates, and I’m pretty sad I didn’t go now I’ve heard I Said Hi, so hopefully she will be back on our side of the planet soon.
