I first heard about American singer-songwriter Jaymes Young (real name Jaymes McFarland) in a Billboard article featuring some of the new signings that the major labels hoped would make it big in 2014. At the time he had just released his album Dark Star, and the slow, melancholy electronic music it contained was well constructed and enjoyable enough, but certainly not memorable. However, almost a year later, I can understand why Atlantic were so optimistic. Jaymes’ latest song What Should I Do, which features on the new EP Habits of My Heart, and was uploaded to Soundcloud just four days ago, sounds like a hit. It’s a charming tune with a catchy chorus and quirky production. The EP’s title track also deserves a listen, as it has a cool groove to it and shows off the husky tone of Jaymes’ voice.
