Future Stars: Dua Lipa (Warner Bros)

Dua Lipa is a new artist from the management company that launched Lana Del Rey, and with her debut single New Love there were notable similarities. The track was co-produced by Emile Haynie, who worked on most of Lana’s best known songs, and the DIY-style montage video seemed intended to be Dua’s Video Games moment. However, the 20-year-old newcomer has set herself apart with the follow-up single Be The One, a vibrant, heartfelt electro-pop tune produced by new Syco signing Digital Farm Animals. While Dua lacks the instantly obvious, cohesive identity that we saw from Lana, and other young female artists such as Lorde and Halsey, there’s enough to get me intrigued for now, and I hope the positive reception to Be The One will spur her on to reveal more. Dua has an interesting background, as she was born in London to Kosovan/Albanian parents, and lived on her own from age 15 when they moved back to Kosovo. She worked as a model and even appeared in an X Factor ad, but a career in music was always her goal. It looks like she’ll achieve it, as the industry is welcoming her with open arms: she’s signed to Warner Bros, receiving strong support from Radio 1 and 1xtra, and already making international promo trips. Rita Ora may soon have to make room for Dua on the Google results page for “singer from Kosovo.”
